David Hovell's Headshot

CHAIR

David Hovell, NS 

David Hovell of Port Williams, NS, an agri-business booster, wine tourism enthusiast and 4-H activist, operates North America’s only winery tourism destination experience aboard a traditional British double decker bus.  He holds a variety of business interests and is a former Executive Director of the Wolfville Business Development Corp. His 4-H history dates back to 1978, as a member of the Cornwallis Project 4-H Club. David has volunteered with 4-H Nova Scotia since 1988. In 2006, he was elected a Trustee of the Canadian 4-H Foundation, later serving as its Chair.  David’s proudest moment in his 4-H career was when his daughter, Taylor, joined Cornwallis Project 4-H Club - now he is a 4-H Dad!

VICE CHAIR

Kim McConnell, AB 

Kim McConnell is the founder of AdFarm, one of the largest agricultural marketing communications firms in North America. Kim is a passionate supporter of 4-H Canada, and a director with a number of companies and organizations. Kim was recently appointed a Member to Order of Canada by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada for his service to his community and country.  McConnell was named along with 99 other accomplished Canadians who have contributed in their way to helping and elevating the status of Canadians at home and abroad. Kim has been giving back to his community since his days in the 4-H McConnell Beef Club, the oldest beef club in Canada, out in Hamiota, Manitoba. He is also the recipient of many national business awards, and in 2012 was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame.

PAST CHAIR

Donna Bridge, ON

Donna operates a purebred Black Angus cattle farm along with her husband and children. She also manages the Country Depot in Kincardine, ON. Donna’s involvement in 4-H started around the kitchen table growing up, as both her mother and grandmother were club leaders in their local community. Donna credits 4-H with giving her the most amazing opportunities and enjoys working at the national level to help ensure the program is here for many more generations to come.

Valerie Stone, ON

A graduate of the 4-H program growing up, Valerie was also the Ontario representative on the 4-H Canada Youth Advisory Committee for 3 years. Valerie would like to pass on what she learned in 4-H and continue to bring her passion, enthusiasm, authenticity, and unique perspective to the 4-H Canada Board of Directors.

Stan Figley's Headshot

Stan Figley, SK 

Stan is a heavy equipment operator and runs a ranch in White Bear, SK with his wife, Shelley. He has been a 4-H beef club leader for the Kyle Multiple 4-H Club for 20 years. In addition to being a 4-H Canada board member, Stan also volunteers his time to the Swift Current Ag and Ex Livestock Planning Committee, helping to put on a four-day show that attracts over 150 4-H’ers.

Blain Hjertaas, SK 

Blain has been involved in 4-H program since his children were small. He has been a leader, district chair and served on provincial board. Blain has chaperoned citizenship conference and been the director of the leaders forum in Toronto. Blain and his son run a farm in south east Saskatchewan. Blain and his wife Naomi have 3 children and 3 grandchildren which they are eagerly awaiting to be old enough to enroll in 4-H.

Leanne Sprung, MB 

Leanne was raised on a mixed beef and grain farm in south central Manitoba and her roots in 4-H run deep.  She was a member in the Darlingford 4-H Club, Manitou 4-H Variety and Manitoba 4-H Beef Club, a 4-H Ambassador, a 4-H leader and was also involved in District, Regional, and Provincial Councils as a Junior Director. Leanne is married with a son who’s just a few short years away from being eligible to join 4-H.

Ida Thomas, ON

Ida Thomas participated in 4-H as a teen and attributes a significant part of her leadership development journey to the opportunities she has had. Today, Ida holds the role of Vice President, Children Teens and Young Adults for the YMCA Canada.

Brad Adams, ON

Brad joined Semex in 2009 after almost 20 years of leadership in the Canadian feed and livestock industry. In his current position as Semex’s Global Training Manager, Brad has the opportunity to develop talent and work to maximize the skills of Semex’s Global sales teams. From his first 4-H Crops Club through to numerous camps and conferences, Brad attributes much of his success in business and in life to those many years in 4-H. The father of four, Brad and his wife Heather spend their time on the family farm in beautiful Brant County, ON.

YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE

Amy McConchie, NB

At 21 years old, Amy has been involved with 4-H for over 14 years. In addition to her role as a member of the Youth Advisory Committee, the national youth voice for 4-H Canada, Amy is the president of her local 4-H club; a district representative; a board member for 4-H New Brunswick; a provincial fair committee member and a photography leader. Amy is a recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh Award at the bronze, silver and gold levels.  In 2017, she was selected as the Duke of Edinburgh’s New Brunswick Duke Delegate for her outstanding contributions in her community. In her spare time, she enjoys horseback riding, exploring the woods, taking photographs and painting.

YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE

Robert Larsen, PEI

From an early age, Robert, a youth agvocate, has worked on his family’s fourth generation beef farm in Cape Traverse, Prince Edward Island. He has been involved with the Albany Centennial 4-H Club for ten years. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of both the Summerside District 4-H Council and the PEI 4-H Council. As a founding member of the 4-H PEI Members Advisory Committee, Robert believes in empowering youth by giving them a vehicle for their voices to be heard. Robert is pursuing a Bachelor of Agriculture Business from Dalhousie’s Faculty of Agriculture. He is excited for his newest opportunity to represent 4-H Canada’s Youth Advisory Committee on the 4-H Canada Board of Directors.
